Paediatric First Aid

This course has been developed for those who are working with children and infants.

Who should attend a paediatric first aid course?

This course is for people working with young children and those working towards an early years educator qualification. This includes:

  • People working in nurseries

  • People working in private nursery schools

  • People working in pre-schools

  • People working in before and after school clubs for children in the early years age group

  • Childminders

  • Carers of children at home.

How long is a Paediatric first aid course?

The course is a minimum 12 guided learning hours in the classroom over a minimum of 2 days. The qualification can be delivered over a maximum of a 6-week period with each training session being a minimum of 2 hours, but ideally it will be completed over two consecutive days.

What is covered in a Paediatric first aid course?

This course provides basic life saving first aid skills and knowledge covering:

  • Role of the Pediatric First Aider

  • Seizure

  • Primary survey

  • Choking

  • Resuscitation (CPR including the safe use of an AED)

  • Minor injuries

  • Wounds, bleeding and shock

  • Recovery position

  • Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis

  • Fractures

  • Head, neck and back injuries

  • Foreign bodies

  • Diabetic emergencies

  • Asthma

  • Meningitis

  • Febrile convulsions

  • Extreme cold and heat

  • Electrical incidents

Is there an assessment?

The qualification is assessed both through practical demonstration and written assessment.

What qualification will I receive?

Successful students will receive an F.A.A accredited level 3 in Paediatric first aid which is valid for 3 years.

How many students can attend a paediatric first aid course?

A maximum of 12 students are allowed per one instructor and must be a minimum of 14 years of age. We can train more than 12 students in one session however we will need to bring in another instructor which will naturally affect the cost of the course.

A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace until they reach the age of 16.
